Manually Setting Up Your Music Player
|
Your music player came with a setup poster and a setup CD designed to make setting up your Gateway Connected Music Player easy. If you no longer have the setup poster, but you have the setup CD, go to "Connecting and configuring your music player" to connect your music player to your stereo system and your computer network. Then, place the Gateway Connected Music Player Setup CD in your CD/DVD drive and follow the on-screen instructions.
If you no longer have your setup CD or you need to manually configure your network and connect the music player, start with "Sharing Folders", then follow the rest of this appendix as instructed.
Sharing Folders
Your music player plays music from networked computers where the music files are stored. The music player must be able to access the networked hard drives in order to find the music files to play. You must first share your music folders, and you may need to change some network settings.
A folder that network devices (like your music player) can access over the network is called a shared folder. To use the music player with your home network, you must first turn on File Sharing on each computer that holds music files you want to access, then share the folders containing those music files.
|
|
When
you share folders on a computer that is connected to the Internet,
other Internet users may be able to access your shared files.
Take appropriate precautions, including installing Internet
security software and setting passwords. If a password is turned
on, see "To configure the music player's network settings",
Step 7.
|
The
folder
one level above the folders containing your music files must be shared. For example, if your music files are stored in C:\My Documents\My Music, you should share the C:\My Documents folder. Your music player will find all music files in the My Music folder and its subfolders.
To turn
on File Sharing in Windows Me or Windows 98:
-
At each
networked computer that has music files, right-click the
Network Neighborhood
or
My Network Places
icon on your Windows desktop, then select
Properties.
The Network dialog box opens.
-
Click

Sharing, then select
I want to be
able to give others access to my files.
-
Click
OK,
then click
OK
again.
-
Restart
the computer.
-
Go to the next section, "To share a music folder in Windows Me or Windows 98:" .

a music folder in Windows Me or Windows 98:
|
|
To avoid security problems and long wait times for your music player, you should not share an entire drive.
|
-
On your
Windows desktop, double-click the
My Computer
icon.
-
Make sure the computer's music files are stored anywhere under one or more of the following locations:

|
-
Select
the
Access Type
you want to allow the other network devices to have to this folder.
Your music player needs the folder to allow at least
Read-Only
access.
-
You can set a password in the Passwords section to protect access to your folders over the network. You should password-protect any folder that contains files you do not want others to access through the network or an Internet broadband connection.
|
|
Passwords are case-sensitive, so remember how you capitalize your password.
|
You must set your music player to provide the required password to access
the folder containing music files. Each player can store only one
password, so all password-protected music folders on the network should
use the same password. For information on setting up the password on
your music player, see "Configuring the music player's network settings".
-
Click OK.

Connecting and configuring your music player
You can install more than one music player in your home, and each music player can play different music at the same time.
Connecting cables
On the back of your music player, audio jacks provide analog and digital audio output to your stereo system or amplified stereo speakers.
To connect
speakers and power:
-
Connect a dual RCA cable to the Analog Out RCA jacks on your music player, or connect an optical (Toslink) digital audio cable to the Digital Out jack.
If your stereo system or speakers require an adapter, use the adapter to
connect the music player to the stereo or speakers.
-
Connect
the other end of the cable to the
Audio In
jacks on your amplified speakers or stereo system. Audio in jacks
may also be labeled
AUX,
CD,
or
Line In.
See your stereo system's documentation for more information on using
an external audio source.
-
Connect the included power cable to the power connector on your music player, then connect the other end to a wall power outlet.
To connect
network cables to your music player:
|
|
If network cables are attached to both the Ethernet jack and the HPNA jack, the HPNA connection is ignored.
|
|
For an HPNA home network, connect a telephone cable to a vacant telephone wall jack, then connect it to the HPNA 2.0 jack (labeled LINE) on the back of your music player. If you have two telephone lines, the wall jack must be for the telephone line connected to the HPNA network.
|
|
You can also connect your music player directly to the network jack on any computer that has a network card. For a direct connection to an Ethernet-enabled computer, you must use either a crossover cable or a hub.
|
|
For an Ethernet home network, connect an Ethernet cable to the network hub or switch and to the Ethernet jack on the back of your music player.
|
Configuring the music player's network settings
To configure
the music player's network settings:
-
Turn on the main power switch on the back of the music player, then press the power button on the front of the music player.
