Q: How do I troubleshoot monitor problems?

A: The following table provides information for troubleshooting a number of common monitor issues or error messages.

Symptom(s) Steps to Try
You have no video on the monitor and the power indicator is not lit:
  • Verify that the computer is turned on.
  • Verify that the monitor is turned on.
  • Verify that the power cable on the monitor is correctly connected.
  • Is the power cable plugged into a surge protector? If so, plug it directly into the wall.
  • You have no video on the monitor and the power indicator is lit:
  • Verify that the computer is turned on.
  • Press any key on the computer keyboard - the computer may be in energy saving mode.
  • Alter the brightness and/or contrast until you get a picture.
  • Verify that the monitor cable is correctly attached to the monitor port on the computer.
  • If not permanently attached, try another monitor cable.
  • You see the message:

    No Signal

  • Verify that the computer is turned on.
  • Verify that the monitor cable is correctly attached to the monitor port on the computer.
  • You see the message:

    Frequency out of range:
    ## kHz / ## Hz

    Please change the display mode to 1280 x 1024 with 60 Hz.

    Note: The error message may reference other resolutions.

    This may indicate that the input signal (horizontal frequency and refresh rate) at the displayed input does not correspond to the technical monitor data.

    • Adjust the video frequency range using the computer software (reference the documentation for your computer or your graphics card).
    You see the message:

    For best picture quality, please change resolution to 1280 x 1024.

    SELECT: Disable EXIT: Clear

  • Set the resolution to the default settings for your monitor.
  • In Display Properties, verify that the font is not set to ClearType. If it is, use these steps to change the font to Standard:

    1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel. If your Control Panel is in Category View, click Appearance and Themes.

    2. In Control Panel, click or double-click the Display icon.

    3. In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Appearance tab.

    4. On the Appearance tab, click Effects.

    5. In the drop box under Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts: verify Standard is selected.
  • The picture position is not correct: This may indicate the monitor recognizes an undefined mode.
    • Press the EXIT/AUTO button to perform the auto-adjustment of the screen.
    • Use the On Screen Display (OSD) menu to set the picture position.
