Q: After formatting or deleting and reinstalling Windows, where can the Monitor.inf file be found?

A: The Monitor.inf file allows the type of monitor to be selected, rather than just using Plug and Play monitor.

After formatting or deleting and re-installing Microsoft® Windows® 9x, the proper *.inf file is not available to correctly set up the monitor. Install the Monitor.inf file for your specific monitor from the System Restoration CD (SRCD) or Gateway Drivers CD that came with your computer system, or locate it on the Gateway Support Web site, which contains the most current version.

Using the SRCD

The Monitor.inf file on the SRCD loads with the restoration process. If it does not load during the restoration process, the Monitor.inf file is located on the SRCD in a folder titled Monitor.

Please refer to the manifest on your SRCD to find the location of the Monitor folder.

You may, if you want to, download the more current version from the Gateway Web site.

Using the Web

The Monitor.inf file from the Gateway Web site must be located, downloaded, expanded, and then installed.

  1. Download the proper Monitor.inf file for your operating system.

  2. After the file is downloaded, disconnect from the Internet, and then double-click the file name that you downloaded. The file expands into a C:\Cabs\75xxxxx (where xxxxx is dependent on the file name) directory.

  3. Using Windows Explorer, open the C:\Cabs\75xxxxx directory, and then double-click the Readme.txt file for instructions on installing the drivers.
